3rd Year Project- 'The Secret Garden Collection' S/S 2011.
For my final project I designed and made 6 fully styled outfits to fit in and around the retail store Warehouse. I had been granted permission to use Warehouse for the live aspect of my project. Throughout the duration of my project I was given constant feedback from a mentor at Warehouse encompassing thoughts feelings about the concept of my design work. This enabled me to productively move forward and create a desired collection for Warehouse. I begun by researching Warehouse's target market audience to give me a generalization about the average customer that shops in Warehouse. My concept was based on the film/novel 'The Secret Garden' by Frances Hodgson Burnett 90 years ago. The secret garden was a motif of secrets, a young girl begins exploring her uncle's estate and discovers a garden that has been locked up and neglected. She began restoring the garden, and eventually some other secrets withing in the manor in which she lived.
I created my own interpretation of this novel and put together a graphic novel displaying the way i would imagine the story to look and feel being inspired by the mysteriousness and adventure of 'The Secret Garden.' I took inspiration from the environment photographing all living and non-living plants, flowers and tree's, i also put together small set designs detailing the theme of the secret garden and edited them in photo shop and illustration to give them a mythical feel.
Fabric manipulation-I had experimented with silk and denim fabrics using techniques such as laser cutting, bleaching and sand blasting creating desired effects through out my entire collection. some examples you can see in the images above they show how i used inspiration from my sets and Incorporated it into my garments.
Each outfit tells a story as you venture through my 'secret garden'. I put together short quirky quotes that unveil the look of each unique outfit.
The Photo shoot-
I came across the perfect location for my photo shoot, the beautiful Queens Park gardens in Bournemouth. The photo shoot really came together with two brilliant LMP models and photographer Ginny Marsh and set designer Natalie Eckett.
